I am overjoyed that Julian Assange has been granted political asylum. A sovereign country has determined that he is at risk of persecution and that it is reasonable for him to fear being sent to the United States. We must at least ask if the Ecuadorians might be right. They invited the Swedes to interview Assange at their embassy but this was declined. Yet the Swedish police were happy to go to Serbia to interview a suspected murderer. Everyone claims that Sweden is a beacon of justice but in 2001 it sent two asylum seekers back to Egypt, where they faced torture.
